Free jazz meets the mercilessly honest verses of the poet Camae Ayewa aka Moor Mother. The eloquent spoken word artist, musician and activist resolutely opposes labeling and stigmatization of any kind. She deals with the effects of racism and colonialism in various creative-expressive contexts and uses resistant incantation to generate bursts of strength to convey her messages. As Moor Mother, she drifts freely between rap, punk, noise and jazz, consistently fits into the canon of African-American civil rights activists and tackles the history of the African diaspora at its roots. The band is an example of how determined forces reinforce each other. All those involved move creatively and expressively as well as socially and politically engaged in multiple contexts. The whole thing has a global catapult effect and hits a vital nerve. (press release)
Irreversible Entaglements combine complex free jazz with the vocals of poet Camae Ayewa, who gives the band's wild improvisations a political edge. In combination with modern, daring means of production, their texts should not only be reminiscent of African-American history, but also be a voice of the community in the present. Not only saying something through words and music, but also making a difference is a concern that has driven the band from the beginning. The group was founded in 2015 after a concert against racist police violence. Initially it consisted of Ayewa, who also performs solo as Moor Mother, as well as Keir Neuringer and Luke Stewart. A short time later the line-up was completed by Aquiles Navarro and Tcheser Holmes, who had performed as a duo at the same concert a few months earlier. (press release)
